"They’re Back!" says Daren Warnick, owner of the Cannery Row Sardine Company, which opened July 4, 2009, on famous Cannery Row in Monterey, California. The Pacific Sardine is being commercially caught and canned again locally, and is reviving the historical sardine business in Monterey. “They’re Back!” symbolizes the once bustling fishing community that helped drive the war machine through two world wars with its endless supply of sardines. It is now on the verge of a cultural resurgence. Shortly after Daren’s arrival on Cannery Row a year ago, he wondered why there weren’t any canned Pacific Sardines available in Monterey or on the Row. He and his brother Anthony envisioned bringing back a vital part of Cannery Row history. What’s more, it seems the entire community is behind them. As they speak with shop owners and operators up and down the Row and with local residents, without exception they are being encouraged to bring the Cannery Row Sardine back to Monterey –– especially to Cannery Row. Cannery Row Sardines are harvested from the frigid waters of the Pacific Ocean, and canned locally. They are being sold on Cannery Row and at local Farmers’ Markets, as well as globally via their Web site. The first CRSC cans contain boneless, skinless filets, packed in pure olive oil. Other varieties, including sardines in tomato sauce, will be introduced soon. With the Omega-3 craze in full swing and the sustainable way that Pacific Sardines are harvested, this entrepreneurial venture appeals to history buffs, nutritionists, and environmentalists alike. In addition to sardines and other locally canned, gourmet seafood, CRSC offers apparel and accessories emblazoned with the popular and attractive CRSC logo and with other retro-label art. Historic, tasty, nutritional Cannery Row Sardines have returned to Monterey and to the street made famous by the Steinbeck classic, Cannery Row. “They’re Back!” | Photo courtesy of The Pat Hathaway Historical Collection |
